Acts as second in command of the tug and barge. Must be able to understand and carry out the orders and directions of the Captain. Must be prepared to assume command in the event of incapacity of the captain. Responsible for safely making and breaking tow with barges, handling lines and wires. Responsible for maintenance and cleanliness of the vessel. This position will operate predominantly in the New York Harbor.

Acts as third in command of the tug. Must be able to understand and carry out the orders and directions of the Captain. The job responsibilities include, but are not limited to the following: cargo pumps, assist in operating tank/pipeline valves, operate manual and hydraulic booms. Must be prepared to assume command in the event of incapacity of the Captain.

Directly supervise, hire, train and evaluate marine personnel. Conduct Tug Inspections, attend SIRE inspections, and conduct evaluations and navigation audits of Deck Officers via direct observations on board. Develop marine operations and cost control programs for vessels. Assist in new project development, interfacing with customers, etc. Assist in vessel scheduling of personnel as required. Produce weekly Operations reports

Perform routine maintenance requirements on a fleet of tugs and barges as directed by the General Manager/Port Engineer. Perform inspections of vessels for repair & maintenance standards and procedures. Work with company mechanics as needed. 

Schedule, coordinate and perform vessel repair & maintenance, coordinate purchasing of parts and repair services and supplies, schedule routine maintenance requirements for tugs and barges. Perform inspections of vessels for repair & maintenance standards and procedures. Keep tugs and barges in compliance with all regulatory agencies. Keep accurate records of all maintenance preformed using company program.

Coordinate with Port Engineers to assist with scheduling, and performing vessel repair & maintenance on tugs and barges.  Work with Port Engineers and Purchasing for approval on purchasing of parts, repair services and supplies.  Perform inspections of vessels for repair & maintenance standards and procedures and report findings to Port Engineers.  Assist with keeping tugs and barges in compliance with all regulatory agencies. Assist with keeping accurate records of all maintenance performed using company software program.

Maintain the vessel's engine room and equipment in a state of readiness to perform work for customers as needed. Perform start up and shutdown and routine monitoring of vessel power and propulsion systems. Job includes pulling heavy lines and hoses, working on oil and cargo barges, general vessel maintenance, and other tasks that may be assigned from time to time. Perform work as requested by Captain and/or Mate of vessel.

Work on an assigned vessel on a regular equal time schedule and be available to assist engineering and operations on the scheduled time on and off. Work as directed by the Port Engineer.

Perform routine maintenance requirements on a fleet of tugs and barges as directed by the Port Engineer. Perform inspections of vessels for repair & maintenance standards and procedures. Work with other company engineers, welders, vessel crew, and mechanics as needed. Assist in maintaining the project management schedule of the equipment. Maintain the facility and vessels in a professional and safe manor while adhering to the policies and procedures in the company Safety Management System. Attend and lead safety talks and Job safety analysis.
