Overview

The Riding Port Tankerman Mechanic is responsible for performing enroute barge maintenance, repairs, technical inspections, and PIC training while supporting cargo operations as need as a certified Tankerman (PIC). This role travels with assigned barges or rotates through the fleet, ensuring vessels remain operationally ready, compliant, and efficient. 

Responsibilities

  • Mechanical Duties
  • Perform mechanical repairs on cargo systems, pumps, valves, heating systems, and deck machinery. 
  • Troubleshoot and maintain hydraulic and pneumatic systems. 
  • Conduct inspections on operational components and recommend repairs or upgrades. 
  • Assist in preparation for SIRE inspections, internal audits, and compliance verifications. 
  • Document all maintenance work performed, parts used, and outstanding issues. 
  • Assist with inventory of spare parts and tools onboard. 
  • Port Tankerman Duties: 
    • Act as Tankerman Person-In-Charge during cargo transfers (loading/discharge), ensuring compliance with USCG and company safety procedures as needed.
    • Serve as Lightering Specialist as needed.
  • Communicate effectively with shore facility, towing vessel, and company operations team. 
  • Review accuracy of PIC’s job paperwork.
  • Train and mentor new and existing PICs to ensure consistency and high standards across the fleet: 
  • Instructions on proper completion of line logs and cargo documentation. 
  • Instruction and guidance on how to properly complete monthly, quarterly, and annual inspections (barge, void, spill, etc.)  
  • Navigation and understanding of SMS.
  • Conduct and support onboard drills (fire, spill, abandon ship, etc.) in accordance with company and regulatory requirements. 
  • Guide PICs on inventory control and maintaining adequate stock of critical supplies. 
  • Educate on routine and preventative maintenance practices for cargo, pump, and heating systems. 
  • Assist in proper procedures for ordering parts, supplies, and consumables. 
  • Provide training on accurate and compliant entries in the Oil Record Book (ORB) and related environmental logs. 
  • Educate PIC’s on proper load and discharge plans in reference to stability, load lines, and loading manuals.  
  • Perform PIC evaluations to assess knowledge, procedural adherence, and readiness. 
  • Conduct transfer audits to verify compliance with company policy, federal regulations, and best practices during live cargo operations. 

Qualifications

  • Valid USCG Merchant Mariner Credential with Tankerman PIC (Barge) endorsement (DL or LG depending on cargo type). 
  • TWIC Card required. 
  • Minimum 10 years of experience in marine mechanical systems or similar field. 
  • Familiarity with petroleum barge operations and cargo systems. 
  • Ability to read technical drawings, schematics, and maintenance manuals. 
  • Must be able to ride vessels for extended periods and work in confined spaces, heights, and adverse weather conditions. 

Skills and Competencies: 

 

  • Strong mechanical aptitude and problem-solving ability. 
  • Self-starter with the ability to work independently onboard. 
  • Clear verbal and written communication skills. 
  • Team player capable of working with vessel crew, shore-side staff, and vendors. 
  • High attention to detail with a strong safety mindset. 
  • Experience with computerized maintenance management system 

Job Condition and Environment

  • Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs. 
  • Work in confined and elevated spaces. 
  • Climb ladders and traverse uneven surfaces. 
  • Tolerate exposure to heat, fumes, and noise associated with cargo operations and mechanical equipment. 

Expected Hours of Work

  • This job requires an equal time (2/2, 3/3, 4/4, or as assigned).
  • Ability to adapt to a variety of schedules and hours.
  • Able to work weekends, holidays, and at night. Willing to take call outs.
