Overview

Manage marine operations of company. Directly supervise the Southern California based tug personnel. Develop marine operations and cost control programs for vessels. Hire, train and evaluate marine personnel. Produce monthly operating reports. Assist in vessel scheduling as required. Assist in new project development interfacing with customers, etc.

Responsibilities

  • Supervise & manage shore based operations personnel-Schedulers, Barge and Marine Operations.
  • Recruitment, training, professional skill development & evaluating marine personnel.
  • Develop and administer operating & cost control procedures on company vessels.
  • Assist in new project development if directed by President, Vice President, or General Manager.
  • Assist in incident investigations, and liaise with Safety Department in management of company safety program.
  • Schedule routine company activities as required.
  • Interface with customers on an ongoing basis.
  • Accident & Spill Free Operations.
  • Prompt and correct response to operating situations.
  • Safety record of vessels and crew.
  • Maintain the confidentiality of all sensitive communications.
  • Facilitate development & implementation of company operating procedures and acceptance by vetters.
  • Perform in the company Spill Management team as assigned.
  • Assist with general office clean up as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Five (5) years at sea as Master on tugboats, tankers or oil barges or equivalent military experience.
  • Five (5) years of increasingly responsible management experience in the maritime industry.
  • Four (4) year college education in Maritime or related studies or equivalent experience preferred.
  • Must be thoroughly familiar with tank barge operations, ship operations, and terminal/refinery operations.
  • US Coast Guard license or US Coast Guard Tankerman endorsement on a Merchant Mariners document preferred.
  • Valid California State driver’s license and US Passport.
  • Valid HAZWOPER (including Incident Command System) training within 90 days of being hired.
  • First Aid/CPR training.
  • Extensive knowledge of tugboat & oil transportation industry.
  • Ability to get along with office staff and vessel crew members.
  • Computer Skills: Microsoft Office proficient.
  • Ability to work with others using courtesy, tact, and good judgment.
  • Ability to understand and execute complex oral and written instructions.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal or no guidance.
  • Must be able to read, speak, write, type, and understand English in person and over the telephone.

Job Condition and Environment

  • Capable of making decisions and giving directions to facilitate prompt service delivery.
  • Must be physically fit enough to board barges and tugs at sea and in port.
  • Frequently required to board tugs, barges, and ships, at dock or at anchor in all weather conditions and at all hours.

Expected Hours of Work

  • Normal office hours are 8:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday through Friday.
  • Takes communications 24 hours a day, including weekends, concerning changes in schedules and conditions.
